sam's success story
Sam referred himself to Actes Trust's New Directions YEI via the programme's Facebook page after completing 1 year of a 2-year course at college.
Rather than continue with his studies, Sam decided he would like support to gain an apprenticeship as an electrician or as an electrical engineer.
how we helped
Sam was assigned an Actes Trust New Directions YEI caseworker who after listening to Sam's career aims, advised and then helped him to create an account on the National Apprenticeship portal so that he could access the available apprenticeship opportunities. In addition, Sam's caseworker also supported him with identifying and registering with useful job-related websites to help with his search for an apprenticeship.
Following on from this, Sam's caseworker supported him with the creation of a new CV, which was tailored to the types of roles Sam was interested in and then supported him to complete a number of good quality apprenticeship applications.
Soon after, Sam was invited to an interview with a local employer and to give him the best chance of success, Sam's caseworker provided him with support and advice around interview skills.
Unfortunately, Sam was unsuccessful at his first attempt, but he didn't let this setback demoralise him. Instead, with support and by showing great resilience and determination, Sam quickly secured another interview for an electrical engineering apprenticeship.
This time round, Sam absolutely aced his interview, and as a result, secured the apprenticeship!
In Sam's words...
"My (Actes Trust) advocate gave me a lot of help towards my interviews, and how to come across when I got there. She gave me tips on what to say and told me how to appropriately prepare for the interviews. She has helped me a lot and I am very grateful for everything she has done"
