Rebecca's success story

Rebecca registered for the Actes Trust New Directions programme after coming across the programme at a Middlesbrough Unlocked Town Hall event.

Rebecca had recently left college and was looking for some support with getting into environmental or animal based work.

how we helped

At the time of her registration, Rebecca was not claiming any benefits and was unaware that she could actually claim Universal Credit. Therefore, as part of her induction, her Actes Trust Advocate put together an action plan which included making a claim to Universal Credit, creating a suitable CV and helping Rebecca with increasing her job search skills.

Once Rebecca had a CV that she was very pleased with, the next task was to help her to become more confident and to increase her chances of success when applying for job roles. Therefore, her Actes Trust Advocate suggested that Rebecca gain some volunteering experience. To support with this, her Actes Trust Advocate engaged with an employer to arrange an interview and supported Rebecca with preparing for the interview – which Rebecca aced!

However, the support for Rebecca didn’t stop here. Her Actes Trust Advocate continued to support her by assisting with job searches and completing job applications, while also reminding her to keep her Universal Credit Journal up to date. And...as a result of this on-going support, Rebecca’s confidence grew, which enabled her to independently apply for job roles.

After a short period of time, one of Rebecca’s applications was successful and she was invited for interview for a Kick Start vacancy as a Green Team Operative. The interview went really well and a few days after the interview, Rebecca was contacted by the employer to offer her the role – which Rebecca happily accepted.

In rebecca's words...

"Right from the beginning my Advocate has been great. I left College after four years - although I had a great experience.

Once it was finished I felt a bit adrift, but then Actes came along and after a phone consultation, with an Advocate, I got organised with Universal Credit.

My Advocate worked hard with what I wanted to do and helped a lot with online calls and how best to access the internet. And she also completely changed my C.V and Cover Letter, so at a click on the button I could send them to employers.

As a result, my confidence grew which helped prepare me for interviews and for talking to different people. Then finally I got a job with the Green Team at Groundwork. There was a lot of online work to complete before I could start and my Advocate was fantastic guiding me through it all.

My Advocate also helped with applying for my provisional license because I'd love to eventually drive. Thank you for everything - I know I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for you".
